More Than a Game...

Journaling Life

Early in my Christian walk, I was encouraged to begin journaling… something I had never even attempted before. The picture above is what I believe to be, one of my first ever attempts at a journal/prayer request. I came across my journal the other day and found this entry from March 2006. I have to confess, this is the only page in the entire journal I wrote on.. Ok, so I wasn’t super successful at my first attempt in journaling...

For the last four years, I have become diligent with my journaling and I have to say this was not an easy task - to sit down and put my feelings and prayer requests on paper. I was anxious about the time I would have to put towards my writing, and what would I really get from it anyway? And what if someone got ahold of what I was writing? I just didn’t see any value in putting my thoughts on paper… probably a guy thing. I know now, that this journaling effort was really an opportunity for me to let God work in my life - and an opportunity for me to seek Him in faith.

Looking back over the last four years of journaling – about 2 to 3 times a week – I have learned that this is a process that takes effort, but I have also found that there is a real and spiritual side of journaling that is very rewarding. That part comes from being able to see how God has answered prayers in my life. I am not the type to look back or dwell in the past, however I am able to take time now and again, and see what God is doing or has done in my life because of my journaling. I found so many instances of Him working in my life that I would have never realized, had it not been for my journal. Looking at this journal entry from 2006, I count 9 answered prayers - several of which I had forgotten about.

GOD IS GOOD.

I share this for many reasons. The first is, being that it’s a new year, we are often excited to start something new… like a new journal. Starting something new can seem challenging and it might not happen the first time or you might start, and not be consistent about it, but I want to encourage you - when it comes to your walk with God, don’t give up. If He’s calling you to do something, keep plugging away. I believe I needed to write my prayer requests and thoughts down on paper… it might not be the same thing for you. However, whatever your “new thing” is, I know God is calling all of us to draw closer to Him. What step are you going to take in that direction?

The second reason I write, is to share how amazing God is at answering our prayer requests. Start writing them down – live by faith – and watch God work wonders. Finally, my encouragement to you is also a reminder to me. I have not been consistent in blogging recently and with this new year, my desire is to be more open and proactive in posting on my blog this year. I am looking forward to growing alongside each of you, and praising God for another year in doing His work.

“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered… “I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:22, 24

My 100th post...

Better late, then never… so I’ve heard. :) It’s been a while since I last posted, but instead of giving you my list of excuses, I will “fill you in” on what’s been happening in and around my life and at Shepherd Sports.

First off, my wife and I recently had our second child, a beautiful baby girl named Kyra. Along with an abundance of joy, I have been blessed with a long to-do list and my nights involve minimal sleep, but she is worth every waking minute and our family is adjusting well. In all things, I praise God, and thank you all for your well wishes!

My staff and I are excited to share that we have had a wonderful summer filled with new relationships, new champions and most importantly, new believers who have accepted Christ into their lives. We have been blessed to see a record number of youth participating in our leagues and camps, and our Second Annual Family Fun Day was another big success, with over 500 people in attendance! Also beginning in October, we are offering 2 new health and fitness classes in an effort to find more opportunities to reach out to our community. These are just a few highlights of this season so far!

This is also the time of year I begin planning next year’s calendar, and I am excited for the new adventures that we will experience together in 2012! As I prepare for next season, I humbly ask for your prayers – for me, as I seek God and His direction for our ministry, and that we might continue to grow in faith and bless our community. Please also pray for our staff, their families, and for all our leaders who serve faithfully for God’s Kingdom through our Shepherd Sports Ministry.

Here’s to hoping my next post won’t take another summer to update!

God, Basketball Camp, Social Media and More...

This past week, we wrapped up our second annual Jrue Holiday Basketball Camp. By far, the highlight of our camp was the All Star Game we had for the kids. Having Jrue at camp each year is such a great blessing for the campers and my staff. He truly cares for the kids, and you can see the joy he gets from giving of himself to each and every child. Jrue took pictures with every camper – all 150 of them – then signed each picture, ensuring every child had quality time with him and a keepsake they will cherish forever.

If you have ever been in my office, you have seen the picture with me and Jordan... yes, Michael Jordan. I worked his basketball camp when I was in college, and that keepsake has kept my memory of that special moment alive to this day. This is the same gift that Jrue has given to all of our campers this week. I pray they will cherish it.

There is no way this blog can recreate the joy of our experience at camp or the excitement of the All Star Game, but I’ll tell you that we are considering selling tickets for admission to next year’s game... it was that good! Below are two videos from one of the most thrilling moments of that day – the same play actually, from two different angles – an “Eastbay off the backboard” dunk courtesy of Nick Young of the Washington Wizards and USC. Besides the degree of difficulty that makes this an amazing dunk, the number of hits for the first video on YouTube is almost as amazing – over 100,000 hits in only 5 days!

The number of hits on YouTube is incredible, and the blessing of this time with Jrue Holiday will be a wonderful memory – especially for the kids. However, the greatest part of camp was the spirit and attitude all the campers, coaches and players represented while they were on the court. We had NBA, International players, and Division I college athletes serving during the camp, and each one gave of themselves to the benefit of the children and the outreach that Shepherd Sports is trying to accomplish.

What God is doing within our midst and through this ministry is amazing. The relationships that were made through these servants hearts, the fellowship the children had with each other, the worship experience we all shared on the court, and the memories that all the participants will take with them – this is God. He has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit and He forms our human spirit so that we may give.

At Shepherd Sports, we continue to put all we do at His feet and watch the spectacular workings of God’s glory in all He does. Enjoy the videos.

How Life Often Imitates Sports

Anyone who plays sports will tell you that we crave the thrill of competition and the desire to push ourselves to be the best that we can be. Then our bones start to ache, and our desire to workout becomes more of a necessity rather than something we enjoy. Human nature pushes us to be the best, but as we get older, we realize that we are not the athletes we used to be - our dreams of becoming an Olympic Gold Medalist or a World Champion fade away.

Our adult sports program gives every athlete the chance to become a Champion again. Whether you watched your high school or college team from the sidelines, or you play a different sport everyday, a good sports league gives us all a chance to compete for the crown once again.

I know that my best days are behind me. However, the opportunity to compete and play with people who desire to push and test themselves is a challenge we want to continue to experience. Going through a season with your teammates is like going through the rollercoaster of life – we share the good times and we share the difficult times. These are the same turns we face in life.

Life often imitates sports, which is why I believe sports, in our country and throughout the world, are so popular. Sports bring people together. We get a chance to test ourselves, our talents, and our skills, against another team. As an athlete, you know that all the individuals on a team have to work together to be successful. We rely on each other to make defensive plays in the field, and we encourage each other to make the clutch hit or nail the winning free throw.

Just as in life and sports, we will have trying times as we grow in our faith. We will have exciting mountain top experiences, and we will encounter times when it seems like the whole world is against us, but God has called us to lean on one another as the church.

Through Shepherd Sports, we hope to encourage and nurture relationships - not just the ones that connect individuals together on a championship team - but one that brings every individual to the cross. To go through life knowing you have God in your corner is an exciting and amazing thing, and one where the ultimate crown is still attainable.

I’ll take my crown in Heaven over a gold medal or championship ring any day.

R U A CHAMP...

Since the Spring of 2006 we have taken a picture of every Adult Championship Team. Everyone has always enjoyed checking out the past Champions and seeing who took the crown the season before. A few years back we out grew the space on the window in my office and have since been looking for a new location to proudly display all our past champions. It is now finished; permanently laminated and stuck to the wall in the Sports Wing. Next time your by the gym, come check it out..hopefully you can spot yourself.

what is GREATNESS?

Most of us strive for greatness in something we do, and watching this video reminds me of what we are all capable of. When I was a kid I loved to ride BMX, and I thought jumping a curb was a huge accomplishment – it still is! After seeing this amazing video and the stunning footage of talent displayed, I am reminded that we are not all called to be great at the same things, but we ARE all called to be great.

Growing up, I knew that being involved in sports was God’s calling for me. After I finished playing basketball however, I did not know what would come next in my career. God used this time to develop and prepare me for this calling in sports ministry.

Although I do not know where my career path may take me next, I see this video of a man who has perfected the art of riding his bike, and I am inspired… not to excel in riding my bike like him, but to continue striving for greatness in the talents God has given me.

I know you will appreciate his talent and enjoy this video. More importantly though, I pray that you will recognize God working in your life and the blessing that is your own talent - and strive for the greatness that is your path.

A DRIVER that finally fits me :)

WOW!!! What a day. We just wrapped up our 5th Annual Golf Tournament and what a relief. That is not to sound indifferent but actually feeling overwhelmed that all the planning and hard work has paid off. God showed up in spades for our annual fundraiser and although I am still trying to catch my breath from the last couple of weeks and the preparation needed for this day...our ministry was truly blessed by all those that came out to sponsor, donate and participate.

We added a few new wrinkles to the program this year and they all seemed to pay off. I spent the day overwhelmed with love from over 35 volunteers who took the day off work or got baby sitters so they could help us with the event...thank you everyone who put their heart and soul into this day. Shawn Parr was again, an amazing success and what a huge blessing for this church and our ministry to have someone use their talents in such an extraordinary way. Thank You Shawn, for everything. The rewards will go so far in our attempt to reach lives through Sports.

My personal day was filled with running from here to there from sun up to sun down...no complaining of course, but man was I tired come 9pm. I couldn't even get out of my office chair to go home after all our guests had gone. It is always fun to see everyone and mingle and thank all the golfers and dinner guests for coming out...and of course checking to make sure everything is perfect to ensure the greatest possible experience for all those in attendance. Two years ago during our round of golf I started sitting at a hole hitting my driver as a fundraiser...I get to take pictures with all the golfers and I also get to work on my swing. The time always fly's by and I hope by hitting balls all day that my swing would improve...not :) All part of what makes this day so much fun...and of course for what I believe to be an amazing cause.

Coming soon to our website on the feature page is going to be a behind the scenes look at this years golf and dinner benefit...this should prove to be funny and a little insightful for everything that really goes on behind the scenes. Thank you everyone, for a great day.

Standing Tall

I can't believe its been almost two months since my last post...I've personally been going through one of the busiest seasons of my life. I can't think of anytime in my life that I have had so much going on at one time. I can't complain as much of what's been going on, is good stuff, but too much good stuff can become overwhelming. I am back with my head above water as I recently finished a class within my masters program, sold our home, packed our old home, moved and unpacked again and am helping my wife through her new pregnancy. YES, were expecting again. :)

So all in all, no complains...just busy. (hence the no blog posts) Someone recently shared this video with me and it touched me as a man, a golfer and someone who has spent time serving on two mission trips to the Dominican Republic. When things seem bad, we need to know that God is your hope and we should only lean on Him. Hope you enjoy.

Im proud to announce the date for our Golf Tournament this year...

Monday, April 18.

With Easter landing towards the end of the April this year we have been playing with some different dates for our tournament since we usually try to run our fundraiser towards the end of April. Besides the date we have several exciting changes coming to this years big day.

First, we are moving golf courses this year to Porter Valley Country Club. As a private club this is a rare chance for those that aren't members to play this Championship golf course. We will also be moving our dinner, auction and trophy presentation to the Family Life Center that same night. I am most excited about moving our dinner on campus because it is going to give those of you who don't golf an opportunity to get involved with our Dinner and Auction. This night is always such a great event and by having it in the FLC it is going to give everyone a chance to be part of this great evening. Also in the house that evening will be Outback Steakhouse and GO. Country's Morning D.J. "Shawn Parr". So save the date and if your a golfer, get that swing ready.

Coming in 2011

Starting this weekend we are proud to announce the launch of "The LineUp". "The LineUp" is going to be a quarterly information and promotional piece that will include all upcoming events, contact information and new program details for all things Shepherd Sports. "The LineUp" design is set up to allow anyone who opens the professionally designed piece to have a quick insight into all we do at Shepherd Sports.

Our pray for "The LineUp" is for the people within our ministry to use it as a way to reach out to their friends, family members or neighbors and encourage them to become involved with what we do. Although we are all passionate about sports our goal has been and will continue to be reaching out to this community to share God's love and word with them. We hope you will not only pick one up for yourself, but grab a few and get your friends and family involved.

As we enter the Christmas season it also represents another year in the books. To celebrate this year we are hosting a Leadership Dinner for all or our Coaches, Captains and Volunteers. As we approach December, 20th...I'm getting more and more excited. Although we communicate and work together all year long with our Sports Ministry Leaders, it is rare we all get to gather in the same place. I am excited to celebrate with everyone (secret recap video is being made) and looking ahead at what we can accomplish through sports for the Kingdom in this city.

If you've been involved with us over the past year as a volunteer of any kind, please SAVE THE DATE...my desire is to gather the heart of the ministry together for one fun night of celebration, and if that doesn't get you excited to come...then come for the free food and some cool give-aways. The evite should arrive in your inbox sometime next week. Make sure to RSVP, the deadline is December, 16. with CHANGE comes GROWTH

With growth comes change and with change can come new problems and new problems can create out of control turmoil and so on and so on. As people we are often so in tune with our own lives that a little distraction or speed bump can send us spiraling for some solid ground. Most of us enjoy the comforts we have created for ourselves and we often times go to great lengths to keep these margins of comfort at whatever cost.

I am all too guilty of this, and God often reminds me we we’re not called to be comfortable with our own Christian bubble. As a ministry leader this issue can magnify it self in many different ways. Over the years God has blessed Shepherd Sports but that doesn’t mean we haven’t faced our own trials along the way. I believe the only way to sometimes achieve growth is through trials…and to achieve growth sometimes God is calling us to change. If we’re standing still, we can often get to comfortable with what we currently have. If I have learned anything, it is that all we have can be gone in an instant. The bubble we create of worldly comforts can be here today and gone tomorrow. This is, except our faith and relationship with God.

At Shepherd Sports I have story after story of speed bumps we have faced along our journey, each one creating new opportunities and chance for growth. I believe this is how we must face obstacles in our life. God is always using a facet of different things to get our attention and on the surface these uncomfortable issues can seem negative and sometimes downright awful. However, we must rest on God’s word that He will not leave or forsake us and He promises to provide for us.

Lets take what comes our way and grow, learn and become better at what we do and whom we are. We must seek God in these decisions but we must look for ways to grow. By taking the glass as half full and the truth that God wants good things for us, our outlook on change should be that of excitement of what God is going to do next in our lives.

Time Matters

2011 in the making

Every year I like to take a few days and get away from the daily grind and my regular schedule to focus on the upcoming year. This year I was fortunate to have a friend offer me his cabin in Big Bear. As someone who loves to snowboard it was torture at times to be in Big Bear with no board and no snow. I can't remember the last time I was in Big Bear to do anything except Snowboard. However, the solitude and minimal distractions was just what I needed. During the week I also managed to go without t.v., (also torture with the World Series on) and no car for several days.

Somewhat forcing my self to take a week out of my normal life was a little difficult at first because it is out of my usual busy schedule. However, after a day or two, I really began to enjoy the quit walks, crackling fireplace and hot coffee with my books. This time is always so refreshing and gives me time to really seek the vision for Shepherd Sports, my staff and the volunteers that serve so faithfully. Above is a picture of a desk calendar that I rip off and put up on the wall to stare at all week. I spend time in pray, planning and trying to implement new ideas for the coming year. The picture above is an empty version before anything goes up...the same calendar now sits in my office full of events, leagues and classes for 2011. Although only pieces of paper, i always see each event or league we run as people who need a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. It makes this time so rewarding because when we get to look back at the lives we changed the time and commitment will be worth every second.

Looking back on my week of solitude was very eye opening to realize the time we spend on things that are not of the Kingdom...the time we waste on the internet or watching t.v. or just getting up and going somewhere because its easy and gives us something to do. As Americans I believe this to be true of most of us, including myself. We have so much at our fingertips that we can fill entire days, weeks and even years of our life up with stuff that means nothing in scope of eternity.

Ask your self these questions: How much t.v. did I watch this week? How many hours did i play video games this week? How long did i go without checking my emails, getting on my phone, texting, seeing who hit me up on facebook? Our attention span has shortened and in turn shortened the time we spend with our Creator. As much as we all plan on spending time with God, reading a book that going to help our marriages or help our kids...life always seems to take over. Things that are important to God should be important to us and therefore should take precedent over video games, t.v. shows, internet and our facebook status. Try unplugging yourself, set Godly priorities, take a good look at what fills your day, week and year and know that God is calling all of us to take a quit walk with Him, everyday.

How important is your spouse?

How important our your kids?

What's really important in the scope of the eternal kingdom???????????

Michael Young

Being 6'9 it is usually easy to figure out what sport I enjoy playing. Yes, basketball. However, when i'm sporting a nice tan (this is not often) some people do guess volleyball. Not sure how to take that...but, most people guess correct, with basketball. Although Basketball ended up being the sport I played in college and professionally it was not always my favorite sport.

As the Rangers are getting ready to play the Yankees it's great to see an old friend doing so well. Many of you might have heard of Michael Young, the Rangers current third basemen and ex short-stop. But, what many of you might not know is that Michael Young is a UCSB alumni. My alma-mater.

Growing up, baseball was my sport...I ate, sleep and breathed baseball. It wasn't until I got into high school that I really got into basketball. While being recruited in High School it was always important to me at the time that any school I went to would also let me play baseball.

One of the reasons ended up signing with Pepperdine is because they had both solid basketball and baseball teams. As my freshman year of basketball season and Pepperdine was ending, baseball season was already underway. I practiced twice with the Pepperdine baseball team before deciding to transfer. So for the first since I was five, I would go a whole year without playing on a baseball team. Interesting fact about that team...Randy Wolf of the Milwaukee Brewers was a freshman that year as we shared the same dorm.

Fast forward one year as I wrapped up my red-shirt year at UCSB. I am back on the baseball field playing on my first ever college baseball team. Although I played the field and hit my entire life, at the college level my only asset was as a pitcher. This was a new role for me, but after missing out on the competitive side of basketball because of red-shirting, I was thrilled to be competing again. We ended up having a great team that year, which was bitter sweet because with the talent we had, my playing time was very, very, very limited. However, the excitement of being a part of a top NCAA team and going to the big dance was something ill never forget. This would in fact be my last season playing competitive baseball. With the school load and the amount of work I was putting towards basketball, something had to give and when your 6'9...basketball usually wins out :)

I share this story for a couple reasons. One, it is cool to see an ex-teammate like Michael Young doing so well and having a chance at winning the big one. As I remember him, he was always a very hard worker and got the most out of what God had given him. It is amazing at what time will do, because Michael was not even one of our top three players on that championship team that went to the NCAA tournament. So don't be discouraged if your not the star right now, or in the position you want to be. Work hard, put in the hours and be faithful that, not you, but God is in control.

The other reason I share this story is I believe all to often we read only the cover of a book. I have gotten dubbed a basketball player ever since I was sixteen and 6'9. Most people don't know I played college baseball, or was a quarterback in High School and played on several travel soccer teams. Granted I am only talking about sports here...but this idea of judging someone with out really get to know them can be extremely unfair. Whether it be there height, looks, tattoo's, piercing or the color of their skin...I believe as Christian we are falling way short on this. I am all to guilty of this as well, but we need to take the time to get to know someone beyond what you see. We don't have to condone the behavior to befriend and or get to know someone on a deeper level.

The first question I am almost always asked is: how tall are you...and that question is immediately followed by: do you play basketball. These questions can become annoying after you hear them your entire life, although innocent enough. What about that co-worker or friend you haven't taken the time to get to know beyond what you have in common. It is all to often only about ourselves, we take someone and put them in a box and move on. I challenge you to dig deeper...get to know someone for real. Why your doing that, don't forget the ultimate gift you can share is the salvation of Jesus Christ. This gift will be so much easier to deliver if you take the time and develop a real relationship with someone. The better you know someone, the more you usually care for them and the more you care for someone the more you want them to have a chance to live eternity with Jesus.

So dig deeper, care a little more and don't be afraid to share the gift of Jesus Christ with someone.

God vs. Football

Yes, its football season...FINALLY. For those of you that are football fans, the excitement of a new season is always fun. As much as I love football season (Chargers and Packers to be exact) it amazes me at the value we put on sports and especially football in this country. As much fun as sports are to play, watch and coach…the position that sports and football has taken within this country is somewhat disturbing.

Hey, my life has revolved around sports for many years and even today my job title has the word sports in it. However, as a man of God the importance of sports must never trump or take the place that God has in our lives. Do we miss church to catch the game, do we skip reading our word in the morning to organize our fantasy football team. We cannot serve two masters…For God to be your Lord; He must be first in all we do. Does that mean we shy away from and shun all things sports? My simple answer is no, however the real answer is all in priorities.

I am obviously bias when it comes to combing sports and God, as it is not only my job but also my passion. As we can easily see from the beginning of the 2010 football season, Americans love football. So rather then assume football is not something God would want us involved in, why don’t we use people’s love of football and reach out to them right where they are.

Shepherd Sports is set up to be that vessel for you to use sports as an avenue to share the bigger picture of a personal relationship with Jesus. A place to play, coach or volunteer in hopes of using sports for something greater then our own personal enjoyment. Sports are often seen as something un-spiritual because it involves being physical and not cerebral. In today’s society and the country we live in, Sports might be the biggest tool we have to reach out to this lost and dying world who so often put things like sports in front of God. With sports being so popular in this country, it just seems like the perfect fit to reach out to those around us. So if you love it, use it. If Jesus is your Lord, then sports can simply be a physical vehicle to deliver the spiritual message of the cross to those around you.

Summertime Fun

On Saturday (August, 28) at Rancho Simi Field in Simi Valley, Shepherd Sports is having a Family Fair Day. With double headers already scheduled for our adult coed softball league and our biking and hiking clubs set to work out that morning we our attempting to get all of our Shepherd Sports family together for a casual day of fun.

Free games and activities for the kids including face painting and a bounce house. Lots of food for sale including burgers, hot dogs, kettle corn and cotton candy. If your looking for something fun to do or want to meet some cool peeps come out this Saturday anytime from 11am - 3pm and join us. We would love to have you and don't forget to invite someone to join you.

Beach Baptisms

This day is a always a highlight for me...this years conditions proved extremely difficult with the waves, rocks and non-cooperative ocean battling us at every turn. Although my feet were scrapped and bruised it didn't compare to the excitement and rejoicing that happened on the beach and in the hearts of everyone there that day. Men and Women from all different backgrounds, cultures and races came to the beach, not worried about there past or the current conditions of the raging sea, they came to give there life to the only one that can control anything, JESUS CHRIST. There would of been no other reason to enter the ocean that day.

What a summer...and we're not even done yet. I wanted to share a few pics I just got back from our Youth Basketball Camp this past July. We were fortunate enough to have Philadelphia 76'er point guard Jrue Holiday, come and be a part of what were doing at Shepherd Sports. The kids ate him up and the camp was a huge success. Jrue was the consummate professional and took time with ever kid. Thanks Jrue, for making this Basketball Camp an experience the kids will never forget.

Things get pretty busy around Shepherd Sports during the summer months...we recently had a chance to get all our staff and family together for a night out on the town. Well, not really...but we did get to hang out and break bread together. We spent the evening at Dream Dinners. A place where you prepare meals, freeze them and then eat when ready. It is a healthy alternative to eating out all the time.

It is always good to get the team together outside our everyday busy sports schedules and enjoy each other as friends. We are so fortunate to have a staff that enjoys not only working together but enjoying life together. This video was put together by our basketball coordinator Alfonso. Talented People or People with Talents?

God truly gives each of us a talent...or maybe 2 or 3. For me, this point has been driven home this week as I prepared to do a half hour radio spot with my good friend Patrick Bet-David on his KKLA show called "Saving America". Patrick has been a faithful member of Shepherd for some time and has an amazing testimony of someone who came to this country as an immigrant, served in the U.S. Army and know runs his own business...and a successful one at that.

Patrick's vision for his radio show has nothing to do with his bottom line or gaining new clients, it is strictly about changing this world for God's kingdom. Not an easy thing in today's society and especially living in southern california. Patrick's show this week is highlighting Shepherd Sports...we air this Sunday (6-27-10) at 12:00pm and again at 9:30pm on KKLA.

I have been blessed by Patrick and I pray our church and sports ministry will be blessed by the airing of the show on Sunday. Included on the show this week is Jrue Holiday and Annette Davis. Both professional athlete's who are running their basketball and volleyball camp's respectively at Shepherd Sports this summer. On the radio program this week both Jrue & Annette share how sports and Jesus has impacted them and how they keep God first in their life. You do not want to miss these interviews as both Jrue and Annette share valuable insights into how they keep God in all aspects of what they do.

With talents like Patrick who use his business connections and love for this country to host a radio show every week that brings people closer to God, or Jrue Holiday who is currently the youngest player in the NBA to give back to his home church with his 1st Annual Basketball Camp this Summer and Annette Davis who has played in the Olympics and still currently plays on the AVP tour and still finds time to balance God, family, work and still has time to give back.

I am privileged and honored to know and work along side these people who go about their everyday life with a passion to use what God has given them to give back and lead people towards the cross. I can only pray that we all find a way to use our God given talents and resources to glorify him.

Kids, Kids & more Kids

On Saturday we launched our Youth Summer Basketball Program. This was one of the first programs I launched at Shepherd Sports in the summer of 2006 and was our first youth sports program ever at Shepherd of the Hills. Wow, have we come along ways. In our inaugural season we had 60 plus kids. As you will notice in the video above we are at over 200 kids for this summer...separated into three different leagues.

God is good, not only with the blessing of these leagues and the facility to host them but by providing the men and women to support them. Our Youth Sports Director deserves much of the credit for the growth of this program...his insight, vision and dedication is inspiring and I believe our youth basketball program is the best in the city: HANDS DOWN! One of Charles biggest win's has been the people he has been able to surround himself with. From the ladies that help do the check in, to the coach's he trains that have the same passion for the kids as Shepherd Sports does. The whole youth program is a win win for all involved and I cant wait to here the stories of lives being changed through basketball this summer.

Not bad for a city boy

Last Saturday the staff and I invited some of the men involved in our ministry for a little out of city experience. We ventured up the 5 freeway past Magic Mountain to a gun range that I couldn't find again, if I had to. We spent most of Saturday learning how to shoot a rifle the good old fashion way. Not that old fashion, but we did learn allot about our heritage and what happened on April, 19 1875. If you don't know that date, it is worth looking up. This gun range is run by a group called "Appleseed" and they teach history while also teaching marksmanship. Very fascinating, but the highlight is still shooting that gun.

As our ministry has grown it has been a great pleasure getting to know all the leaders within the ministry. It has also become a major part of what we do here at Shepherd Sports. Young or old, we all need direction and discipleship. With the added volunteers and leaders within Shepherd Sports, it has been both a challenge and a reward to watch people grow in there walk. Shooting guns is just part of the fun, but adding power to someone's quiver for the Lord is where the real joy lies.

Dono & Dud at Easter

With Easter behind us and our 4th annual golf tournament just around the corner (april, 29) the family and I are in the midst of getting away for a few days. With a 18 month old boy running around there is never a dull moment and the time I get hanging with the family is always refreshing

A round or two of golf always helps and after being out of commission for over a month with a badly sprained ankle, doing anything competitive is good for my spirit :) I have had to slow down over the last month or so with my ankle and the extra time has been good to get a few projects done and spend some more time with the family. I believe I am still a few weeks away from getting back into any real running or playing. Please pray that there is nothing serious with my ankle and that I would be able to return with no permanent issues.

When I return we are preparing for our big golf tournament push...I am blessed with all the support for this years tourney. We have created a new golf committee and they have stepped up beyond my expectations and I can't wait to see the results for this years fundraiser. If you golf or would like to come experience the dinner & auction don't forget to sign up before the deadline of April, 25. We have tons of raffle and auction items that all benefit what we do in the sports ministry. We would love to have you be apart of what were doing. We hope to see you there.

I wanted to share a letter I recently wrote to my Indoor Soccer Team that I captain'd this past season. I think it gives the insight into why Shepherd Sports exists. Our ministry needs leaders who desire the things of God and not their own personal agenda's. It is this principle that drives what we do at Shepherd Sports...in an effort to change the world one person and one sport at a time.

I know it is cliché to say...but I wouldn’t judge our season on the number of wins and losses...oh yeah, we can’t forget all the ties. Although we suffered through some trying times this season, I had a blast hanging with some old friend and making some new ones. Just as in life, we don’t always get the WIN...but what God asks us to do, is trust in Him and keep our faith that He is in control. I pray if you don’t have a home church already, you would consider giving Shepherd a try...we are about Jesus and what He did for each one of us on the cross. Jesus doesn’t care what church you go to, or what your job title is or how much money you make...He cares about the relationship you and Him hold together.

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” HEBREW 11:6

Playing Catch up...

There is no doubt I have been slacking on my blog posts. I do enjoy sharing about what’s happening here at Shepherd Sports and occasionally sharing about my life. However, the business of the season has kept me from writing as much…so ill attempt to make up for lost time :)

Our biggest hurdle has been the addition of our online registrations and although this new resource is a huge blessing, there are a lot of trials and work that goes into running these new programs. We are blessed with a great IT department and we have all been working hard to make this process as easy as we can for anyone looking to sign up online. Tonight we are getting ready to launch our Fall Boot Camp Class, which always proves to be a huge turnout. We are wrapping up our Winter Basketball League as well as winding down our other adult winter sports. We are also in the middle of our 2010 golf tournament and although its still over a month away, we have tons of work to do in order to run a successful tournament. If you love to golf, you don’t want to miss this day. Save the Date: April 29.

On a personal note, I am currently down and out with a bad sprain of my ankle. It’s not broken but I was hobbled with crutches and now a good limp follows me everywhere I go. For those that know me, understand what agony this is for me, as I love to be active and involved in as many sports as possible. However, I remain in good spirits, as I know God has a plan for this time in my life. I ask for your prayers that my ankle would recover in a miraculous way and there would be no permanent damage.

As the whole church gets ready for EASTER I hope we all are seeking out people to invite to church. This time of year is a great opportunity to invite those around you to attend church service, as most people are more open about going to church at Easter time. It’s time to get out of our comfort zone and time to help those around us see and understand who JESUS really is...may all those around you recognize these things in you.

Why God Created Golf

I want to talk to the people that don’t play golf and help you understand why God created Golf and why you should encourage people to play Golf

God wanted men to understand His kingdom (he knew it would be hard for them) so he created Golf

Another chance = Mulligan

Ask for Forgiveness = Yell 4

Golf teaches outreach = invite 3 other guys

Teaches faith and to expect miracles = hit a club that you know that you can’t reach the green with

Prayer = please let me make this putt

Teaches us to have quiet time = when others are hitting 400 times a round

Teaches to sacrifice to God = hit a ball in the water, woods, or I don’t know were it went

We get to see all that God has created = never hit the ball in the fairway

It is easier to get to heaven if you follow the straight and narrow = fairway and stay out of the sand traps

Heaven = just get on the green you have done the minimum/// closer to the pin the better your works

Teach us to help each other with brotherly advice = don’t hit the ball there again

Sand trap = a taste of hell

Thanking God = your ball is on the green

Talk to God = How did that happen

To be of service = Get other guys club or tend the flag

Teaches us grace = great shoot or your ball is over their behind the tree

Parable =God tells Jesus to create a game to teach about the Kingdom so He will not have to keep explaining the parables to the disciples

Golf update...

As most people know we run a big Golf Tournament every Spring as a Fundraiser for Shepherd Sports. This day is always a blessing and a time that God has always shined upon all that we do here within the ministry. This one event has allowed us to offer scholarships throughout the year for all our programs and has helped us grow in ways we wouldn't have otherwise been able to. This Golf Tournament is essential to our growth and all we do in the ministry.

Although the day in itself is a huge blessing the months leading up to the day can be rigorous and stressing. There is so much that goes into running a golf tournament and then you add the fundraising aspect and it turns into a full time job for the 4 months leading up to the tournament. I am currently in the midst of the storm...however, I am blessed to announce that we have formed a GOLF COMMITTEE and what a blessing these men and women are going to be. I am excited to watch this group of people network and find news ways to maximize our fundraising efforts.

I had a chance last week to actually swing a few with a some of our Golf Members. As you can see from the video, i need help...so here is what i'm asking: If your a golfer send me some tips on my swing, but more important then my swing, I am asking for people to step up and join our new Golf Committee. Please email me with either as both my swing and our fundraiser could use you. Bonus points if you can name the course and the hole we're on.

Although I am a Basketball guy at heart and I love our Basketball Leagues, it is our growing coed leagues that have become some of my favorite times of the year…as I often look forward to playing in my soccer and softball games each week. Our leaders and captains have done such a good job at making our coed leagues both fun for everyone and competitive at the same time.

I’ve played in a lot of different leagues and this combination of playing for fun with a competitive atmosphere is not easy to achieve. The atmosphere that we strive for at Shepherd is one of Love no matter how good you are at sports. Our desire is that everyone feels loved while getting to compete in the sport they love or they are learning the sport for the first time. I pray our leagues would always welcome every kind of athlete, as sports are so much more then the win’s and loses.

The Deadlines for both our Coed Soccer and Softball leagues are fast approaching…if you haven’t had a chance to sign up, you need to do so before Monday, January 18.

Christmas is now behind us and we are getting excited about the New Year. I am excited to announce that starting in January we have a new part time staffer that will be joining us. His name is Alfonzo Nunez and he will be our new Basketball Coordinator. If you have been around any of our open gym's or any of our hoop leagues you might recognize Alfonzo as he is big time gym rat and man that loves God. We are excited to have Alfonzo on board as he is going to oversee a lot of our adult basketball leagues as well developing our new referee ministry. Please pray with me for Alfonzo and his wife as they transition into this new position.

Moving Mountains

Often times God leads us to places we would of never thought. As I spent time this morning praying for my staff, it got me to thinking of all the different places we come from. My wife and I moved here four years ago from San Diego and we both thought we would never leave Americas finest city. Charles our Youth Sports Director comes from everywhere as it seems he has some family in every state east of the Mississippi. Matt our Adult Sports Director comes from Washington and originally moved out here to pursue acting and has now found himself in full time ministry. Emily our Health & Fitness Coordinator comes from Minnesota the land of the Vikings. We love her anyways.

My vision this morning is that God can move mountains...just as He did with our sports staff here at Shepherd. Four years ago there was no such thing as a Sports Ministry at this church and now we sit with four full time employees who four years ago either lived in another part of the world or had a totally different career path. God worked and moved in each of us to prepare us for this time and this ministry.

God has plans for each of us. The question is, are we heading those plans and submitting to the ONE who is capable of moving mountains. Don't get so settled in that we stop looking for God to move in our lives...don't get so complacent that we think we have life and God figured out...don't stop pursuing God, His word and His plan for your life. He's waiting to move you.

Dodge, duck, dive, dip & dodge

Yes, you read correctly...its time for some DODGEBALL. Nothing says Christmas like throwing some balls as fast as you can with the intent to hit someone and have it be legal. The balls are red after all.

We start next week and have 5 different divisions you can get involved in. On Friday, December 11 we are going to bring the top two teams back from each division to compete for their respected Championship. The prize for the winners...the sweetest dodgeball shirts of all time.

The NEW Sport Wing

This weekend Shepherd Sports launches it's new Sports Wing. This has been a project in the works for almost two years and the staff and I are super excited about the launch this weekend. This new space at the west end of the Family Life Center will become the new entrance to everything we do in the gym. This new space will also become the new Sports Information area during and after church services. Shepherd Sports will now have a place where anyone can come during church hours to sign up for a program on our two new touch screen monitors or check out upcoming events on the flat screen. Team N.W.O. has gone five seasons and two years without a Championship. To say we were due is an understatement. Although we have had some tough losses and some not so memorial seasons, all the guys that have come and gone have been a blessing to play with.

Dudley and Tan have been with the team from the beginning and we are definitely proud of this most recent Championship. On previous teams we were able to get by on being bigger and more skilled but our league has grown and with it the level of competition has gotten really good. I am proud of the league and the direction its heading and am also proud of this group of guys for pulling together so we can call our self's CHAMPS again.

The Tree & the Tree Hugger

I have spent most my life being a head taller then most of those around me...on more then one occasion i have been called a tree...both in a funny way and also in not so funny ways. As you can see by this years halloween costume i believe it is better to poke some fun at your self once in a while. To often we try to hide who are as Christians because we think those around us expect us to act in a certain way. I believe we need to let God shine through us in all we do...in all settings... in all walks of life. In no way am i perfect at this, although i strive to never hide who God has called me to be, and God has definitely called me to be tall and there is no hiding that.

I can't believe our boy turns one today...wow, how time flies. It was a year ago that the fires raged through the hills of Porter Ranch and my wife went into labor while working that morning. It was a day that we will never forget...for many reasons including the wild ride to the hospital.

I am beyond blessed with my family and I thank God everyday for the health of my family. God blesses us in so many ways that are so often not seen. Our human nature is to want things that are tangible and we to often forget to look at how God is moving in our lives. God moves in ways that we will never see but He also moves in ways that we will only notice if were looking for them. Have you stopped and counted your blessing lately??? Would you expect to see God move if you haven't prayed for you family???

Thank you God for the protection and guidance you show me everyday, may I never take you for granted and may I always seek you in all I do...so I might become a stronger/greater man of for you. May I never forget that all we have is from you. Please protect and bless my family and give me guidance in leading us in all you would have us do...AMEN

We just wrapped up another great season of Summer Coed Softball...Congrats to Brent and Christian Johnson for captaining there team to the championship. It takes a lot of awesome volunteers to pull off such a big league and last week we got to say thank you to those faithful volunteers by taking them to a Dodger Game. Although I was not personally present I can assure you that this group had a great time.

Thanks to all our volunteers who constantly give of there time and talents for the sake of our Lord and Savior....we couldn't do it with out you.

When no one's watching...

When no one is watching, what will you do? In the heat of battle, how are you going to respond? When times are tough and your flesh is weak, how will handle yourself? Will you give in or compromise when you feel like the world is against you?

These are the questions we all ask ourselves from time to time, but perhaps not often enough. Every day we are confronted with little decisions that affect those around us, our friendships, our marriage and most importantly our walk with God. If you think about it deeper, we should all be more concerned with those decisions we make every day that might seem small, but essentially make up who we are. These actions and or responses to life can come and go without us ever knowing they were there. Why are we not more focused and aware of these things?

I think we would all agree that life comes at us fast, and sometimes, in the whirlwind, we have comprised something that is important to us before we even realize it. Just as the Bible says that our mouths speak from the overflow of our hearts, I believe many of our actions stem from the same place. What are our hearts overflowing with? Are we seeking our own personal gain or that which God might desire from our lives? Is living your life according to God's will important or not? If it is, then these small decisions and choices we make every day will be a priority as we make sure we represent Christ to the fullest. Time spent with God and in His word causes the overflow of our mouth and actions to stem from a holy place and not a worldly place.

Below is a letter I recently received from a buddy I have known on the basketball court for over 20 years. We have played both against each other and together. Although we never hung out much off the court, we spent countless hours together playing ball together and as rivals. Recently my old friend found me on facebook and sent me this letter. I don't often get emotional put this letter showed me proof of God working in and through me. I haven't seen this guy in probably five or six years, so what he is referring to is the first two to three years of my walk with Jesus Christ. The point is, we never know who is watching or is being affected by the way we lead our life.

I pray all of our actions and decisions would be based on His eternal Kingdom and not our own earthly desires or pleasures.

A letter from a long lost friend

What’s up man! Wow! You have been on my mind for the longest time and I'll try to make this short! Well first things are great: I’m getting my Masters in Sports Science, I'm the assistant coach at a college, and doing some non-profit stuff for kids, got married in August of this last year, so things are good.

Ok, let me get to the meat…I remember way back when, when people would tell me Josh has changed; he is all into the Lord. It was strange to me at the time I truly didn’t understand. I had different friends that so called changed because God came into their lives but I didn’t get it.

The last time I saw you we were playing on the same basketball team…I had asked you to play in this men’s league and all I can remember was my hot temper...everyone knows I get heated playing hoops and I was cussing and fussing. lol Well, I have been working on that :)

What I am trying to say is I didn’t get it until it happened to me! I didn’t get how you changed your life around and how you felt about God until it happened to me. It was 2006 at the ________ Church when I gave myself to Christ and it's been the best thing that’s happened to me.You know me!

You have played with and against me and Josh, I finally get it and I am glad God gave me the time to get it. My wife now runs the ____________ ministry at the ________ Church and after she started attending church with me. Now she is working with the Pastor on this huge ministry and she is touching so many women’s lives; yep, God is good I have so many great stories since He saved me.

My friend, what I want to say to you is “I get it”! I respect you so much and you are not crazy! People use to tell me something was wrong with you! Yeah, imagine that! You have done a great job by leading by example and I appreciate that. I bet we both have our struggles and trust me I am far from perfect but now it’s not about me! It’s about God! Brotha, you have been on my mind and I just had to find you and tell you thank you! When I didn’t understand it, it was because I was lost...but now I do :) keep in touch! If you are ever here in _______ and want to shoot some hoops or go to church let me know.

I just returned from a short trip to Baltimore where I met with some of the country's biggest sport's pastor's. What a blessings these guys are...to hear their hearts and see there vision is inspiring and re-assuring that Shepherd Sports is heading in a path that not only glorifies God but reaches out to this lost community we live in. It is exciting to see sports used as a tool to bring people closer to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Although it was a short trip it was a long flight but for the first time ever i was able to log onto the Internet while flying at 30,000 ft. It was a good time to get some work done...except for the lady that insisted on talking to me although I had my head-phones on. What's up with that?

I attended a Baltimore Orioles game while i was there and it was a blast exploring a new stadium. Had I stayed put in the first inning when I got to the game i would have snagged a home run ball that ended up hitting only a few rows from me after i got up to walk around 15 seconds earlier...so close. I love attending ball parks and exploring them and sitting in all the different sections. As a kid my dad and I would fly around the country to visit different ball-parks together. They are some of my fondest memories I have as a kid with my dad. I think it might be time for me to know take my dad to some ball-parks...I can't wait for my boy to be old enough for us to get out and explore the world together.

While on our trip to the Dominican Republic this past August, I was fortunate enough to play against the D.R. National Team. Through a connection with the mission organization in the D.R. they some how got this white boy on the court with the locals. It was a fun experience although not a good one basketball wise. The team I played with was the second string to the D.R. Olympic Team that we played against and we had no team chemistry and got beat by a ton. It was so bad, that at one point as one of my three pointers was literately falling through the hoop my own player knocked it out. (legal in international rules, but still cold in any country)

Through it all; it was a good time and in the end we hopefully got Fransisco Garcia an NBA starter for the Sacramento Kings connected with G.O. Ministries. (The organization that we worked with in the D.R.) God sure work's in mysterious way's.

My wife and I celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary this month. I am a lucky man and I could not do what I do without such a wonderful women by my side. To prove that point, this video below is from the new toy my wife bought me for our anniversary. For those that don't know me, I am hard to shop for...but the wife wins an award for this cool gadget that can capture all my outdoor activities.

Thanks honey...for being the best wife I could of ever asked for. The new toy is also awesome.

We made it...we are finally back from our trip to the Dominican Republic. What a week and what an experience. It feels great to be back at home with family and friends. It also feels great to be back to things such as; hot showers, cool evenings, comfy beds, fast food and organized traffic.

We were blessed as a team and I can honestly say we accomplished our mission and left an impact on the people we meet and came in contact with. I want to thank everyone for all the prayers and support while we were gone, they were definitely felt. There is so much more to so check back as I want to post some more pictures and cool video when I get a chance.

This personally has been a big under-taking and now that we are ready to go, it makes it all worth it. I can not wait for the experience and to see how God moves through all of us. What a week...Basketball camp ended on Friday with the kids getting a little crazy for the camp photo. The photos above are just a glimpse of the silliness that goes on during camp. I have to thanks all of our coaches and volunteers, you guys did an awesome job and made this camp one of the best around.

If you have never worked a camp there are two things you need to know. First, a day at camp can be like a year. However, second is the joy of watching the kids grow and mature in both there faith and basketball is a lasting impression that you will hold for a lifetime and worth every ounce of energy you put into it.

Oh yeah...volleyball camp starts on Monday, another long rewarding week ahead.

On Wednesday this last week our Shepherd Sports city league softball team was able to capture it's first ever Championship. This group of guys are a huge blessing to me and the Sports Ministry. All of the guys pictured above serve as Captains or Volunteers for our Shepherd League and it was so enjoyable to gather every week with these guys to fellowship and play ball. I'm going to miss Wednesday nights at the park. Thanks guys for a great season and for all you do to serve the Lord through this ministry.

On Tuesday we wrapped up our Men's Summer Basketball League. My team and I were able to reach the finals for our Tuesday Night league but we were denied the Championship by the Back to Back Champs the Electric Boogaloos. I am proud to say that our Basketball Leagues have become highly competitive in all our divisions. However, because of that my teams have recently been unable to win a Championship. It looks like I will be on the hunt for a few 7 footers. If your 7ft tall or have a 40 inch vertical please give me a call as I have a spot for you on my team.

WOW…I woke up this morning after playing my first game of soccer in over 20 years so sore that getting out of bed became a all morning event. Yes, the last time I played organized soccer was 20 years ago. I decided then that there was no need for me to run over 5 miles a day to play goalie.

Shepherd Sports started its first ever soccer league last night and no I didn’t play goalie. From all accounts last night was a big success. The Jerseys looked awesome and we now have 90 new members of Shepherd Sports through the sport of Soccer…Praise God. I see a big future for this sport and can’t wait to see where God moves.

If you missed signing up for this season we will be starting another league in January. Some advice: start training know for January as indoor soccer might be one of the most physically challenging sports I have ever played. Then again it might just because I let 20 years past between playing.

We just finished are last day of Soccer Camp today...and what a week. I wish I could take credit for the camp but all the credit goes to our Youth Sports Director Charles and his team of volunteers. Everyday of camp was filled with fun and exciting games and ways to keep all the kids engaged in learning the sport of soccer. Of course Popsicles and water balloons make any summer camp a fun experience.

A thank you for all the coaches, volunteers and parents who helped make Soccer Camp a memorable one. We still have Basketball, Volleyball and Surf Camp coming up this summer and we still need volunteers and coaches. June gloom is gone and summer is in full effect and with summer comes two new adult league's that will start in July. We will again run our Summer Softball League at Rocky Peak and for the first time ever we are starting a Indoor Soccer League. I personally am really excited about the soccer as I haven't played organized soccer or indoor soccer since I was 13. Indoor soccer has tons of action and doesn't require as much skill as outdoor, nor the conditioning: thank God. I'm excited for the new people soccer will bring into the ministry and we have already seen a ton of volunteers step forward. If you are interested in getting involved with soccer or softball contact our Adult Sports Director, Matt and he will get you dialed in. See you on field this summer.

This clip is from Larry King Live with my old Pastor Miles McPherson. Pastor Miles is at the Rock Church in San Diego where I grew up and started attending church after I got saved in February of 2000, the same month that the Rock Church opened its doors, so I have always had a place in my heart for both the Rock and Pastor Miles.
Pastor Miles is a friend and a true man of God and has been on the front lines of the prop 8 issue. Beyond being a great speaker, Pastor Miles has always had a way of breaking down something complicated and making it easy to understand. I am proud to have this man going bat for what the bible teaches about Marriage being between one man and one women.

I am in Arizona this week at a our big sports ministry conference. This is always a great time for me to refresh and meet with other sports mini sty's guys from around the country. Both Matt and Charles are here with me for the first time and I am excited for what they will bring back to our ministry at Shepherd.

I had a chance to surprise the guys with a game at Chase Field where we watched the Dback's vs. the Rockies. It was a great game with a lot of action and a total of 26 hits. The field is amazing and getting to hang with my staff outside of work is a treat I always enjoy.

This past weekend I was invited to play in the 2nd Annual Fight Against Cancer Basketball Tournament. I was reluctant at first since the weekends are usually my time to get away from sports and hang with the fam. However, my inner child couldn't help but get excited about playing basketball all weekend.

What my inner child doesn't realize is that my body is in its 30's and doesn't like to play that much basketball. However, the inner child won out as I ended up playing six games in less than 48 hours. After getting beat by 40 in the first game, I was doubting what I had gotten myself into. I give a lot of credit to these seven guys on my team because after that blowout, our team really hit a nice stride and we came back and won the whole tournamnet. We redeemed ourselves by beating the two best teams, including the team that had beat us by 40 in the opening game.

I am only now getting over the soreness from the weekend. I want to thank all the guys for letting this old man run with the young guns. It was a fun weekend that reminded me why I love sports so much, and although the winning is fun, it's ultimately the commraderie and friendships that are being formed when everyone is striving for the same goal. We were not the most talented in this tournament, but we by far played the best team ball and it showed as we beat teams much more athletic and skilled than us.

100,000 Miles...

How often do you see that

My little car or "my beater" as I like to call it, hit the 100,000 miles this past weekend. I don't know why but this seemed like a cool moment as I drove from my house in Simi Valley up over the hill into L.A. where "my beater" right at sunset conquered this cool milestone.

My little car has been quite the blessing over the last couple years. A few years ago, my mechanic said we needed to replace the transmission; but without the funds to pay for it we starting praying that God would take care of the car. The mechanic said the car wouldn't last another couple months without a new transmission but God took care of that car for over a year until we saved up enough money to get it fixed.

It is easy to lose God and His glory when were not looking for it. Be faithful in prayer and watch for God to work miracles in your life. Just like the little beater that could.

For those who were in church this last weekend, you should have received a Youth Sports Booklet in your bulletin. Thanks Tony for your generous heart and the awesome booklet you created! I also have to thank our in-house graphic artist Rick Robledo. Rick works behind the scenes to help us in a lot of different areas. Our ministry wouldn't be what it is today with out people like Tony and Rick. Thanks guys!

If you missed church this past weekend, you missed not only getting the Youth Booklet but yours truly up on stage giving announcements. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be in front of this awesome church to share about the Sports Ministry and what we've been up to, as well as our future plans. It is amazing to see the response and hear from different people about how they have been affected by the Sports Ministry. We have men and women from all backgrounds and all walks of life who step up and serve with joyous hearts for the Lord. I am honored to have these people in my life and more important privileged to have them serve at Shepherd Sports.

I just want to thank everyone who serves in this ministry, for their service to what God has placed on my heart. To reach and disciple people for Christ through sports. I pray for you daily and hope we never loose sight that what we do is "MORE THAN A GAME"

Our Spring Volleyball League is starting soon and my wife couldn't be more excited. We started Volleyball last year, and since she was pregnant during our first season, she couldn't play. Although the only volleyball skills I have is my height (and some would question whether or not height is an actual "skill"), my wife's happens to love the sport. So....it looks like I will be playing volleyball this spring with my wife and some friends. It promises to be a fun time. Come join us. Deadline is next week so hurry and sign up.

Today my staff officially moved into their new offices. Over the last week or so we have been gradually moving all our odds and ends into the new space. However, today the computers and phones we need are up and running and the Sports Ministry finally has a place to call home.

During our team meeting this morning, we spent time praying over each desk and staff member who will be occupying that space. As we continue striving to let God lead us, we also turn this space over to Him. If you get a chance, please pray for the Sports staff, that God would use our gifts and talents to golifiy Him.

In Campinas , Brazil a group of friends, drunk, went to pick up a friend.....
The mother accompanied her to the car and was so worried about the drunkenness of her friends and she said to the daughter holding her hand, who was already seated in the car:

Hours later, news came by that they had been involved in a fatal accident, everyone had died, the car could not be recognized what type of car it had been, but surprisingly, the trunk was intact.

Working from home today because my baby boy is fighting a bad cough. As a new parent by only three and a half months, I am becoming more and more aware of God's love for us. As I watch my boy play, or sleep, or even cry, my love for him pours out of me. I can't help but imagine how much more God loves us than that! I have to think that my son needs to build up his immune system so he can fight off other viruses and infections as he gets older. I believe it is the same with you and me. As Pastor Dudley shared in church a couple weeks ago about pruning the branches, we need to fight off things today that are keeping us from being all God created us to be. Sometimes we need the trials and tribulation so that God might grow us.

Though my love for my boy seems so great, our Lord in heaven has looked down on each one of us since the day we were born with a love that we can't begin to comprehend. God desired for us to lean on Him and have faith in Him. Just as I feel I can teach my son so much, how much more can our almighty God teach us? We are like children in the sight of the Lord. Humbly set yourself before Him and watch what He can do through you.

The busyness of life often grasps our every spare moment and it is easy to lose focus of what God has petitioned us all to do. So how does a church, or a ministry or a single person stay focused despite the busyness of everyday life? How does one keep God first in all one does? How does someone find a balance as we are called to be in the world but not of the world?

For me, it boils down to the simple idea of leadership. Many of us read books or listen to sermons or motivational speakers discuss how we can become leaders, and we often only think of someone who is powerful as having the ability to lead. However, I believe that each individual person, great or small, can be a leader. It doesn't matter if you have the big desk in the big office, God has called each and every one of us to be leaders. As a follower of God we must also lead.

The word of God is our answer on how to lead, and godly leadership is our answer to avoiding the pitfalls of this world. If we as Christians are able to ground ourselves daily in the word of God and dwell on what God has called us to do, our leadership will flow from that which we put our trust and time into. The word of God is our ultimate tool for success in anything we do. It is our road map to become the best leader (follower of God) we can be. You might lead a big company or you might just lead those around you, but if you lead in the way God has asked us all to lead--in humility, love, and service as Christ showed us--then your life and your testom0ny will show and speak the truth of God.

In the busyness of life, may we as leaders always find time to put God first so we might lead for the right reason.

Looking into our future offices

Inside still needs a little work

It seems lately that, along with our everyday busy lives here at Shepherd Sports, we have seen an accumulation of projects taking place. Although these special projects take a lot of time and planning, I believe they represent the growth and progress we have made as a ministry at Shepherd. It is only through God's blessing and grace on Shepherd Sports that we have been able to grow and continue God's work. Please continue to pray for this ministry as we all recognize that, without putting God first and as the backbone of this ministry, we won't go anywhere.

After launching our website in December, our biggest project is finally breaking ground on our new office space this week. If you have been in the gym recently you will notice the new pipe and draping that is hung on the south side of the gym. This new space behind the pipe and draping will allow us to move some of the large objects that use to be keep in our storage/office space. Our old storage and office space is being converted into new office space with a small storage area. We are excited to get this done and finally have a place for the Shepherd Sports employees and volunteers to call home.

Love & Basketball

A friend called me up to join him in a charity basketball game they were putting on at Westmont College for the victims of the recent fires in Santa Barbara. It was a nice two-day trip for the wife and me, and gave my boy a chance to see his dad play for the first time. It started out as a great experience for him until the first buzzer went off and then the ref's whistle. One of the two would go off every few minutes while Donovan tried to sleep in mommy's arms, and it turns out Donovan doesn't love the gym as much as daddy (yet). But I will cherish the memory of looking up from the bench and seeing my boy sitting in the gym with his mother. He better get used to being in the gym, because that's where daddy likes to play and work.

Emily, me, and Charles

It has been my dream and prayer since starting here at Shepherd to build and grow leaders who desire to use their gifts in sports to minister to others. Over the years, we have found a lot of men and women who fit this category and bless me every day with their service to the ministry. Our newest staff member has been serving as our Softball Coordinator since we started a year and half ago. Matt Ireton has come a long way in his faith and commitment to the Lord, and we are all excited about him becoming a full-time staff member of Shepherd Sports.

Matt will be overseeing all of our adult sports programs and focusing on the ministry of our captains and leaders within these leagues. As Matt and his family prepare for God's new calling on their lives, will you pray with me for the following:

That the transition would be smooth and easy...
God would continue to protect the Ireton family...
God would lead and guide Matt in this new position of leadership...
That Matt would bless all those he comes in contact with him...

Last week the staff and I had an opprotunity to bless all of our leaders with a Christmas Party at my house. As I watched the weather forecast for a week prior to the party, I noticed each day it getting colder and colder and it was suppose to rain the day of our party. God definitely answered our prays as we ended up with a wonderful night outside under the stars...with a few heat lamps to help the cause. An hour after everyone left, it started pouring down ran. God is good.

With the expanding ministry at Shepherd, it is nice to bring everyone together to fellowship and enjoy the season. Ernie, my Golden-Doodle, entertained the kids throughout the night along with a game of "Pin the tail on the reindeer." I want to thank everyone for coming, but more importantly for serving God through the Sports Ministry. You are all a blessing to us.

The Importance of Our Youth!!!

Anyone who has been involved with Shepherd Sports over the last year probably knows who Charles is by now. Nearly a year ago, we brought Charles on to head up our Youth Sports Programs and what an amazing job he has done. Charles has a great gift with kids and parents alike. The kids love him and I love him even more for taking over this much-needed area of our ministry.

In society today there are a lot of opportunities for our youth to get involved in sports. However, after looking around at the quality of coaches, fields, and programs, I find many of them are lacking something. I would argue that the missing ingredient is Jesus Christ. In all we do with our youth, we desire to have coaches with godly character who teach our kids biblical principles. It's important that any young person active in sports sees and is surrounded by good Christian role models both on and off the field. I'm proud to have Charles as a leader who always exemplifies these attributes, and I believe any parent who has had their child in any one of our programs would find this to be true.

As we grow, we need more godly men and women to step up and be leaders. If this is something you have ever wondered about, we would love to have you join us. We offer training for coaches and currently have needs in both our Youth Soccer and Youth Basketball programs.

Team: "Stay Classy" 2008 Volleyball Champs

Our first season of Coed Volleyball is in the books and what a season it was! Initially, I thought volleyball would be a sport that might take a little time to grow and build. However, 150 people signing up for the first league made our newest sport automatically one of our biggest. With such a demand for volleyball, we have plans this December to add another volleyball court in the gym. This will allow us to run two courts on the same night and should open up for some fun-filled nights of open gym in 2009. Be sure to invite some friends who do not know Christ to come out and play, because at Shepherd Sports it's more than a game! Our next Coed League will start in March 2009, .

Ride & Thrive...

This past Saturday I finally had a chance to join our Mountain Biking Ministry for one of their rides. Let me just say, what an experience. The views, the exercise, the fellowship...it was all awesome and worth every sore muscle I woke up with the next day. In the end we did close to 18 miles around the hills of Encino, about 17 more than I prepared for.

Our mountain biking leader Dave Schneider is incredible. He helped me get off my training wheels (wish that was a joke) and out with the big boys in no time. Dave's experience and knowledge in the sport of Biking is amazing. I was fascinated as Dave explained the intricacies and details of the sport. Who knew there was so much to know about riding your bike? Not only does Dave have vast knowledge and experience on the trails but he also has raced professionally, and it shows, as he often doubled back throughout our ride to herd those of us hanging in the rear.

If you have ever ridden a bike or have thought about getting out on a trail, I couldn't recommend a better guy to have by your side then Dave. He truly has a passion for the sport and loves to teach. It's official: I'm a daddy and a blogger now. With two proud Grandmothers around the house we now have close to 500 photos already. That's equals out to a picture for every minute he's been alive. It's like having the paparazzi around the house 24/7. But who can blame them when Donovan looks as cute as his mother? Let's just hope he can throw like daddy.
